What It Means For Me To Be A Maker

I make cups for morning coffee and bowls to serve food that is cooked and given to provide more than calories. The goal of my pottery is to help a person break the daily loop that we so easily cycle into. To perhaps provide a moment of connection to something other then what needs to be done next. I try to take the night walks looking at the stars, the places you can just see through the ice, the rising reach of fire and place it in the coffee cup to snag the loop and hold you there maybe for a minute.

Very often my ideas cannot be fully explored in Pottery and I shift to thicker and larger sculptural work. The limitations of a cup are set aside and I think of stone, ice, water and fire as forces creating multiple elemental moments collectively manifesting as a sculpture.

I am often working in my studio, and you are always welcome to come visit. I realize that having a creative space where people come and go is important to my work. Turning my ideas and thoughts into words and sharing them out-loud is important in their growth. I want to hear what you are working on, and how you translate it. Send me a note and stop in for a visit.
